Retaining wall is an important structure in civil engineering. A Civil Engineer needs no introduction for a retaining wall but for other’s information I will briefly explain the purpose of a retaining wall. A retaining wall is a supporting structure that retains the unbound and loose soil of unnatural slopes and serves the purpose of aesthetics at the same time. I have prepared a tutorial for my viewers for the design of cantilever retaining wall. A cantilever retaining wall uses much less material than a traditional gravity wall. They are built from steel-reinforced, cast-in-place concrete or mortared masonry.
So first go through highlights for the design of a cantilever retaining wall.
Following is the sketch of the retaining wall with all the dimensions, which I have designed in MS Excel.
The following data needs to be filled before the start of design.
Find out the active and passive earth pressure co-efficients. Then assume thickness of base.
Then calculate the base length of the wall.
Calculate stem thickness as follows:
Now check ‘d’ for shear reinforcement of stem , proceed as follows:
Next step is to check factor of safety against overturning.
Check factor of safety against settlement and sliding.
If the check for sliding is not ok, you need to provide shear key.
Design heel of cantilever as follows:
Find out the main reinforcement and shear reinforcement.
Then find out reinforcement for stem.
