He was the torch bearer of hope; yes he was the man who revolutionized the paradox thinking of people regarding the rights of black Americans. He was a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was born on January 15, 1929. He strived hard for the black people to be given equal rights as those enjoyed by white people. He had been a national icon advancing with the aim to bring a revolution. He fought for the civil rights of black people and led non-violent civil disobedience. He won the nobel peace prize in 1964 at the age of 35 that made him the youngest nobel prize winner for peace at that time. He delivered a historic speech on August 28, 1963 at Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC while addressing to his people in which he emphasized on equality of rights for all human beings. His speech was very optimistic and brought hope of revolution. He founded Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957 and was its first president. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while he was standing on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis Tennessee, US during a protest in sympathy with garbage workers. His services during his fight for the rights of black Americans are written in golden words on the pages of history. He was the symbol of hope and his struggle is evident from his life history though he lived for a very short time span. His words ‘I Have a Dream’ and ‘Let Freedom Ring’ can never be forgotten whenever there will be talk of black people’s rights.

Etabs Example Model Part 2

Dear viewers here is the second part of the tutorial of example model. Up to this stage our model drawing is complete. Now we will apply the loads. For this first of all we have to define the loads our building may be subjected to.

1. First of all go to Define→Static load cases

2. The following window will appear. Dead and live loads are already defined. Click any one of them and edit.

3. Write the name of load like ‘SDEAD’ and select the load type that is ‘SUPER DEAD’. Then click ‘add new load’.

4. The load will be shown in the list. In the same way add ‘wind load’. In the ‘auto lateral load option select according to the code you are following. I have chosen ASCE 7-02.

5. When it has been added, highlight it and click ‘modify lateral load’. The following window will appear. Select ‘Exposure from Frame and Area Objects’. Change the wind speed according to the area where the building is located.

6. Now add Earthquake load in x direction. In ‘Auto Lateral Load’ select the code. Then click ‘Add New Load’.

7. Now highlight EQX load and click ‘Modify Lateral Load’. Provide details about Soil Profile Type and Seismic Zone Factor and other details.

8. When the loads have been defined, now you have to add the load combinations. For this go to Define→Load Combinations

9. 1st load combination which I have added is 1.2D+1.6L

10. In this way one by one add other combinations. Or you can also use default design combinations already present in the software. For this go to Define→Add default Design Combos

11. Now select the type of the building you are going to model. As we are modelling concrete structure so I have chosen Concrete Frame Design.

12. Now we have to apply loads to the slab. For this first select the slab, go to Select→By Wall/Slab/Deck Section

13. The following window appears. Choose Slab1 (we had already defined in Area Section).

14. All the slabs will be selected (don’t forget to choose ‘similar stories’ option at the bottom). Now go to Assign→Shell/Area Loads→Uniform

15. Enter the loads one by one following the same procedure as described below:

Select Load Case Name ‘SDEAD’, choose Units ‘lb-ft’ and then write down the magnitude of the load 30 or as specified.

In the same way first select the slab and apply wind load and other loads.

16. Next step is meshing of the slab. For this go to Assign→Shell/Area→Area Object Mesh Options

17. Auto Mesh Object into structural Elements and then check ‘Further Sub-divide Auto Mesh with Maximum Element size of 24′.

18. To view the meshing of the slab go to View→Set Building View Options and check the option for ‘Auto Area Mesh’ in Other Special Items.

19. Now the model will look like this.

20. Now we have to provide End Length Offsets for better connection of beams and columns. For this go to Select→By Frame Sections. All the Beams and Columns will be selected.

21. Now go to Assign→Frame/Line→End Length Offsets.

22. Select Automatic from Connectivity. Click ‘ok’.

23. Now we have to provide the restraints for columns. Go to the bottom storey and make a window selecting all the column foundations.

24. Now go to Assign→Joint/Point→Restraints (supports)

25. Select fixed restraints in the following window. Click ‘ok’.

26. Now your modeling is complete. Run the Analysis

Your structure’s deformed shape will be displayed. You can check the structure’s deflections under various applied loads one by one by playing the animation. You can also check the design by going to Design→Concrete frame design→Display design info

Etabs Example Tutorial Part 1

Dear viewers, I am yet again here with an informative and useful tutorial on Etabs. My previous tutorial was much liked and I get to know that people are interested in learning Etabs. The previous tutorial was a bit complex, so today I thought of making an easy tutorial of the example mentioned in Etabs Documentation and Tutorials. I will complete this modeling step by step in 2 tutorials. In today’s tutorial I am going to describe how to draw the columns in a building. So dear learners, here we go

This building has 4-storeys. Other specifications will be described during modeling.

1. Double click the Etabs icon on your desktop or from the Start Menu.

2.Click on ‘New Model’.

3. The following window appears, click ‘No’.

4.Now you have to enter the data for your model. In my case, X and Y grid spacing is same i.e 24′ and bottom storey height is 15′, also the typical storey height is 15′. Number of X and Y lines are 4 and number of storeys are 3.

5. Click ‘Grid Only’ and then click Ok.

6. Now your grid model will be displayed like below:

7. Now you have to define the properties of your model. First of all we would define Material Properties. Go to Define→Material Properties.

8. The following window will be displayed. Concrete and Steel are already defined in Etabs, so you can modify their properties or define any other material as well. My structure is concrete structure so I am going to modify the properties of concrete here.

9. When you click on modify, the following window appears. Change the properties according to your requirements. Click ok to close the dialog boxes.

10. Now you have to define the Frame sections (beams and columns). Go to Define→Frame Sections

11. The following box appears. Click to add a rectangular section.

12. The following box appears. This will be your Beam 1. Name the section and choose concrete in the material list. Write down the size of your beam, here I have taken 12*24. And click on the reinforcement.

13. The following dialog box will open. Click on beam and specify the top and bottom cover for rebars according to the requirement.

14. In the same way define Beam 2. Size of Beam 2 is 16*28.

Now again click on Add Rectangular to define the columns.

15. Name it Col1, choose material ‘concrete’. Write the dimensions of column. Here I have taken 12*12. Then click on reinforcement.

16.Specify the cover and then click ok. In the same way define Col 2. Its size is 14*14. Click ok to close the dialog boxes.

17. As my model is having same arrangement of beams and columns in all the three stories, so I want to place the beams and columns once in the 3 stories. So at the bottom of this window, I have chosen ‘similar stories’ option.

18. Now define the area section that is the slab. Go to Define→Wall/Slab/Deck Sections.

19. Slab1 is already defined. Click on modify/show section.

20. The following dialog box appears. Write down the thickness of your slab and bending (a usual practice is to use the value of one unit less than the thickness for bending). Choose your slab type. Click ok.

21. Now we will place the beams, columns and slab one by one. For this go to ‘Create Lines in Region’ as shown in the figure.

22. A small window appears. Here you will choose which beam you want to place first. Choose beam1.

23. Click on the lines where you have to place Beam1. Beams will be shown by yellow color.

24.In the same way select beam 2.

25. And place it on the required lines in the plan.

26. Now click on ‘Create Columns in Region’.

27. A small window appears. Choose Col1.

28. Click on the points where you have to place Col1. Columns will be shown by green colors.

29. Your model will look like this.

30. Now we have to place the slab. Click at ‘Create Areas’.

31. Choose Slab1.

32. Now one by one click on each panel. The boundary color will change indicating slab.

33. This is how your model looks after placing slab on all the panels.

33. Click on the small ‘tick ‘symbol indicating ‘Set Building View Options’.

34. Click on ‘Object Fill’ on the first column and then check the box at the bottom ‘Apply to All Windows’. Click Ok.

35. Now you can see the extruded view as shown below:
